Thoughts On Popol Vuh

Before starting this reading, I knew nothing about the sacred text Popol Vuh. I had never heard of it and did not know what it was going to be about. As I started to read, I found it to be a little challenging to keep up with what was going on. There are a lot of different names of people and places being thrown at you and it was difficult to keep track of who was who. However, as I continued reading, I started to find great interest in the characters and what was going on. What has made the text even more interesting to me is the fact that it is serves an origin story for the K'iche people. It is really special to have something like Popol Vuh in a culture that can be told to generations forever about how things came to be.

A part of Popol Vuh that stuck out to me was how long it took the gods to create the version of humanity that they deemed to be correct. In most cases gods are superior people and one would not consider them to make mistakes. However, in the story things kept not turning out how they wanted them to and it took them multiple tries until they were satisfied with a creation. I feel like this creates a great message to pass on through the generations of the Maya.

  2. Yes, the idea that it takes "trial and error" and a few times to get it right in the sense of making human beings has been a point of comment. Are gods supposed to get it right the first time? Why might making mistakes be an important characteristic?
